Tribute & Message From The Family

Dennis Patrick Dougherty, of Philadelphia, passed away on December 17, 2020 at the age of 70.

Dennis, known to his friends as "Denny Doc," was the son of James Dougherty and Joyce (Owens) Dougherty, and beloved husband of 26 years to Linda Dougherty. He was a loving father to Kaitlyn and Devon. He was the brother to Robert, Francis and Joyce.

Dennis loved all animals, but especially horses. He worked for more than 30 years at Philadelphia Park Racetrack (now Parx Racing) as a groom. He and Linda met in a barn on the Philadelphia Park backstretch, and they were married by the Philadelphia Park chaplain. A true racetrack character, Dennis was passionate about horse racing and always loved the thrill of a "hot horse" to bet. Dennis is remembered by many as having a pet goat, Happy, whom he would take for daily walks around the perimeter of the track. Two of his favorite horses were Blazing Sally and Harvest of Hope.

He loved all Philadelphia sports teams, but the Phillies and Sixers were his favorites. The start of the NFL season was always an exciting time for Dennis, as he loved to participate in the weekly betting pool at the track. He was a very generous person who would not hesitate to help someone in need. He was especially proud of the accomplishments of his daughters - although he himself did not graduate high school, Kaitlyn earned a Master's Degree and is a CPA, and Devon earned a Bachelor's Degree and is currently in a prestigious international horse racing program.

He also loved spending time in Stone Harbor, NJ, where his grandparents had a home for many years. A day on the beach near 109th Street was his idea of heaven, and he loved to recall summer nights spent at the old Shelter Haven Hotel during his youth. He also had an affinity for Springer's Ice Cream in Stone Harbor, and Pop's Water Ice in South Philly.

Memorial contributions in Dennis's name may be made to the ASPCA at www.aspca.org. Services provided by John F. Givnish Life Celebration Home, 10975 Academy Rd., Phila, Pa 19154.
